Chapter Six
Hattie wasnât certain if she responded.
Yes! The word was so loud in her mind for a second she thought he must have heard it. But then she realized that she was frozen in place, her lips still parted in surprise and her heart beating so fast and so hard, it seemed to fill her chest and trap the word in her throat.
He wanted to kiss her.
Her gaze dropped to his mouth, his lips...
All night sheâd felt as though she were in a dream. Theyâd been out here talking for ages, and with each passing second she was more and more certain that sheâd left the real world behind and had fallen into some wonderland.
And now this.
It was too good to be true. He wasnât just handsome, he was perfect. The way he spoke, the questions he asked, the stories he told.
It was like sheâd written his character herself.
She blinked. That was it. Sheâd fallen into a romantic novel. Sheâd finally lost her grip on reality and was now living in a dream world.
His hand moved up to cup her cheek. âMay I?â
His eyes were as fathomless as the sea. His calloused hand rough against her soft skin. His gaze fell to her lips, which were still parted in silent invitation.
âYes,â she whispered.
Yes, please.
Time seemed to stop as he slowly lowered his head closer to hers. She felt his warm breath along with the brisk wind. She had just enough time to take a quick inhale of air before his lips closed over hers.
Perfection. A thrill ran through her as heat blossomed in her belly.
Had she been cold a moment ago? It was hard to imagine because now she was on fire. Her limbs were flooded with liquid heat as his hot, firm lips glided over hers, tasting and teasing and exploring.
She trembled and he wrapped his arms around her just in time as her knees gave way and she found herself pressed against him, letting him take her weight as she savored the feel of this magnificent kiss.
Sheâd always imagined that when she had her first kiss it would be nice. Pleasant, even. Her sisters seemed to like the act well enough, so she knew it wouldn't be bad.
But nothing had prepared her for this heady sensation, the feeling that she might melt at his feet or maybe fly apart into a million pieces. It was heavy and light, intense and fragile.
It was so many sensations at once, her mind ceased trying to make sense of them.
All she could do was feel.
The weight of his arms about her, the gentleness in his firm lips. The way he kissed her and held her as though she were a cherished treasure.
She smiled against his lips.
Yes, it was that sensation again. The feeling of being seen and appreciated for exactly who she was.
That was the headiest feeling of all. So intoxicating she thought she might lose her senses entirely.
But then he was lifting his head, gazing down at her with a sweet smile and a sadness in his eyes that made her come back to her senses with a jolt.
